When Joan Greenwood returns to New York City from seven years in academia and not one of her relatives remembers to meet her train, she is not surprised. Joan is, after all, a very minor member of a very important family. This goes far to explain why the Greenwoods were fine with Joan’s long absence.

Joan misjudges. Her family has a long history of forgetting about Joan, but in this particular case, they forgot about Joan because they’re preoccupied with what is potentially an existential crisis.

But first, some worldbuilding.
